Therefore, it is primarily focused on bodily functions where it can be of greater benefit. As mentioned earlier, it works on gas and the associated bloating, but it also relieves indigestion, soothes stomach cramps, and helps in treating constipation, which is Asafoetida’s contribution to the digestion department. When it comes to headaches, asafoetida, when mixed with water, shows promise in treating migraines and tension headaches. As an antidote, it works wonders for snake bites and as an insect repellent when mixed with garlic. As an expectorant, asafoetida oil helps rid the body of excess mucus and eases respiratory function. Many use it for whooping cough, asthma, and bronchitis. When phlegm is a problem, asafetida helps expel the buildup of coughing. Some concoctions that seem to combine well for coughs and as an expectorant are roasted fresh gum resin powder with ghee or a mixture of asafoetida powder with honey, white onion juice, betel nut juice, and dried ginger. Asafoetida has a very unpleasant odor, so bad that many call it the "devil's dung." The stench comes from the resin extracted from the stem and root of the plant. Asafoetida is a type of fennel plant but is closely related to carrots. The unpleasant odor is caused by the organosulfur compound present in the essential oils. When it comes to the value of the asafoetida tree, the oldest, best, and trees less than four years old are virtually worthless. When you buy asafoetida at the market, it will likely be available in three different forms, one of which is called tears, which is commonly sold in Chinese pharmacies and may distinctively contain both the root and ground parts. It is also sold in a paste, which is commonly used as a spice to flavor dishes like curry, to flavor beans, sauces, and pickles, and many use it as a garlic substitute. Some other unique uses for asafoetida include that if used regularly in recipes, it has been suggested that it may increase male fertility. It is also often used for toothaches. It has also been proven effective in treating psychological and mental illnesses. A chickpea-sized amount of asafoetida is placed in a cup of water, left overnight until it dissolves, and drunk for forty days. Another method for treating stomach cramps is to melt asafoetida in oil over a fire, let it cool, and then smear it on the body, especially the stomach.
