Cloves  :

Cloves are certainly one of the most recognizable herbs, but ironically, they've been around forever and haven't gone out of business yet. Usually, if you can't get your hands on some cloves, allspice can be a substitute. Cloves have some preservative properties, but they work well as an antiseptic, expectorant, anesthetic, or disinfectant, and are good for the kidneys, spleen, and stomach. Some people make a hot tea of cloves, bay leaves, cinnamon, and marjoram that helps with bronchitis, asthma, coughs, infection proneness, tuberculosis, altitude sickness, nervous stomach, nausea, diarrhea, flatulence, indigestion, dyspepsia, gastroenteritis, side effects of lobelia, and depression. Sometimes people mix cloves with hot water, then make the tea again, and claim it helps them get a good night's sleep. Cloves and ginger are a surefire way to soothe an upset stomach and stop vomiting.

If you combine equal parts clove and basil, it is supposed to detoxify your body from meals. Clove has been used for failing eyesight and dental problems. It has been used frequently for earaches throughout history, as placing a little warm clove oil on a cotton ball and in your ear was sure to relieve any earache. Clove is mostly known for its warming and spicy flavor, but it also has a strong association with pain relief, alleviating nausea and vomiting, and improving digestion. Clove also kills intestinal parasites and acts as an antimicrobial agent against fungi and bacteria. Clove has also been suggested to have antihistamine properties as well. Don't be too quick to dismiss the potential of clove and aromatherapy, as the two have a very strong connection. Since clove has a positive and stimulating effect on the mind, it pairs wonderfully with other oils for aromatherapy purposes. In the 16th and 17th centuries, clove was worth its weight in gold, but clove oil was the most important. In Indonesia, many people smoke clove cigarettes, and this trend spread to the United States for a time, but it largely fell out of favor when it was discovered that clove cigarettes could cause respiratory distress syndrome in adults. The word clove comes from the Latin word "clavus," meaning nail. If you've ever looked at a clove, you'll notice it resembles a nail. Many people use whole cloves when cooking lamb, sticking the prickly part around the outside edges of the lamb for extra flavor. Indian curries are indispensable, but cloves are also used in marinades, chutneys,  Worcestershire sauce, and even spice cakes baked from scratch. Throughout history, cloves have not been forgotten, but they have lost some of their popularity. Some still use them as a spice, others for simple dentistry, and even more so for aromatherapy. People still consider cloves an "old-fashioned" herb. For some families, they have been passed down through generations, and there is still a jar of whole cloves in the pantry for that special lamb dinner.
